If we all intentionally look for problems - big and small- that need solving and try to do something about it- the world will be a better place. We don’t have time to wait around for someone else to help. Not when... 844 MILLION people around the world do not have access to clean water. Not when...Women and girls miss opportunities to go to work and school because their days are consumed by hours of walking to fetch water. Not when...every 2 minutes—a child dies from a preventable water-related disease. We ALL should feel a sense of urgency and call to HELP NOW. So we would like to encourage each and every one of you to go out and do some good in the world. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty, because that’s the only way we can make a difference. Gandhi said, “In a gentle way, you can shake the world.” Sometimes the smallest act can make a difference. The smallest shift in the sand. The smallest DROP of CLEAN WATER. The smallest set of hands contributing. We encourage you to go out and make even the tiniest of differences; because even a small match can cause an explosion. We are Girl Scout Brownie Troop 60200, with 18 third graders from Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School in Orland Hills, Illinois. Our main Girl Scout project this year was taking our "Wonders of Water" Journey, where we learned all about the importance of our earth's freshwater resources. We decided to use a portion of the proceeds from our Girl Scout Cookie Sale to help provide fresh water to school children in another part of the world!

Our troop has been learning about water this year. We've been learning about conserving water, keeping it clean, and educating ourselves on the worldwide water crisis. It's now time for us to give back and this is a project we choose to help our world in our own small way.

This year we’re raising money to support clean water for Good Samaritan Primary School in Uganda. Your support can really make a difference for kids in Uganda. Good Samaritan Primary School currently has a rainwater collection tank attached to their facility, but with over 1,500 people relying on it each day, its supply simply isn’t sufficient to provide adequate water for the washing, cooking, and drinking needs of the students and staff. By adding a second rainwater collection system to the school’s facilities, we will be able to significantly bolster the school’s water supply and, in doing so, improve the ability of students to succeed in their educational aspirations and secure a bright future. Our implementing partner, Ugandan Water Project, will erect a 10,000-liter polyethylene tank on a base made of brick, hard core and cement. Once cured, their crew will then place the tank on the base and make an overflow hole in the top of the structure and attach a pipe to it that will extend six inches beyond the perimeter of the base. Crew members will also attach face boards to the roof of the building adjacent to the tank in order to create a suitable surface to which they can attach the gutters that will allow water to flow from the metal roof to the tank. Just before the outlet pipe reaches the tank, a “T” joint will be inserted to create a first flush, a rudimentary filtration system that reduces the amount of debris and contaminants that enter the tank. The crew will then construct a protective barrier around the tank and first flush, as well as a tap stand located slightly downhill of the tank. The rainwater collection system will be paired with four Sawyer Point One water filters in order to ensure that all water collection from the tank will be safe for drinking.

We want to teach our students that they can make a difference in the world. This project closely aligns with our curriculum, as we study about microbes and disease. Also, our school has been involved with H2O for Life for a number of years, and this campaign touches on many of the themes we have worked to educate our students about.
