In the town of White Bear Lake, two elementary schools, Matoska International and Willow Lane, are teaming up to learn more about the global water crisis and take action! Both schools have their own “Water Warriors” Club where their teachers have introduced them to the Global Water Crisis and H2O for Life. Staff from H2O for Life visited both clubs and spoke with them about how we want to work together to solve big global issues like access to safe, clean water and sanitation around the world. Batey Project a Success

Posted by Steve Hall on February 6

Background: The Dominican Republic is home to approximately 230 rural communities known as “bateyes” set up around state-run sugar mills, which once formed the economic backbone of this small Caribbean nation. The bateyes are socioeconomically isolated communities previously built by the government on sugar cane plantations to house cane cutters, mostly from neighboring Haiti. Today, both Haitians and their offspring and Dominicans live in the bateyes in extreme poverty with limited access to essential services, including clean drinking water—a fundamental human right. The lack of access to clean drinking water sources in these communities has often forced families, especially children, […]

When Washington Steps Back, America’s Students Step Up

Posted by Doug Niemela on February 11

Sometimes, the most powerful solutions come from unexpected places. While the federal government retreats from funding critical global water initiatives, students across the United States are proving that leadership isn’t about politics—it’s about action. That’s why I wrote a guest commentary for the Minnesota Reformer: to share a story of hope—one that proves strategic investments in young people and the nonprofit sector aren’t just nice ideas; they’re the antidote to government inefficiencies and over-correction. The Problem: A Broken System Leaves Millions Without Water The recent freeze on international development funding means that millions of children around the world are at […]

H2O for Life was a sponsor of this year’s National Student Council and National Honor Society conference. It was held in Chicago and student leaders from around the world were in attendance. We hosted an exhibit booth and delivered a session talking with youth about how to lead service projects addressing the water crisis at their schools. One of the people who spoke during the session was our very own high school fellow alumni, Camila, who led a project at her school in Costa Rica that helped provide access to two schools in Nicaragua with our implementing partners El Porvenir!
