Project Review
Our implementing partner, Cova, recently installed a school-based water purification system, locally known as a Sistema Combinado (Combined System), to provide safe drinking water for students and staff. This system functions as a compact treatment solution with two key components occurring simultaneously: 1) the reduction of turbidity (removal of suspended particles to improve water clarity), and 2) disinfection to eliminate harmful pathogens. Together, these processes ensure that water is both visibly clean and safe for consumption.

The system was installed by Cova technicians in collaboration with students, creating an interactive learning opportunity to build understanding of water treatment processes and system maintenance. Following installation, Cova’s Program Manager, Oneida, has begun to implement an education curriculum on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). She will conduct regular follow-up visits and work closely with teachers to reinforce safe water practices and promote long-term behavior change.

Performed Activities
The project began with a comprehensive WASH assessment to identify existing conditions, gaps, and opportunities for improvement at the school. Findings were presented to the Parents’ Association, and the water purification system project was introduced through a collaborative planning process. As part of this partnership, the community committed to constructing the support structure for the elevated water tanks, a critical component of the system.

Cova provided technical oversight throughout the construction process to ensure adherence to quality and safety standards. A detailed bill of materials and cost estimate was developed to guide procurement, and all system components were sourced with a focus on cost-efficiency and timely delivery. Once materials were secured, the water tanks were transported from Cova’s Marcala office to the school in Arenales.

The installation of the water purification system was completed with the participation of several guests from Florida, and their presence made the installation a particularly meaningful moment for the Primero de julio school community, as well as for Cova’s local implementer, Oneida. The event fostered a strong sense of partnership and shared accomplishment among all involved.

Following installation, the water purification system significantly improved access to safe water and sanitation at the school. To support long-term functionality and community ownership, Cova conducted hands-on training sessions for school staff and community members, covering system operation, routine maintenance, and basic troubleshooting.
