Salem Hills & Atheneum Students Make Positive Change Through Water Fair
Salem Hills Elementary School and the Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program held a Water Fair this spring as part of their year-end service learning. Before the fair, students learned about the global water crisis through H2O for Life, a nonprofit organization that increases access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene around the world. The Water Fair gave students an opportunity to address the issue through education and fundraising.
The fair included a Water Walk and an educational arcade. Students carried jugs of water around an outdoor course to simulate the journey that nearly one billion around the world must make for clean water. Signs were set up around the course to highlight facts about the importance of having access to clean water. The experience highlighted the time and effort it takes for students in other places to stay healthy and in school without clean water infrastructure.
Students designed and built their own educational games for the Water Fair arcade. Each carnival-type game included facts about water, the environment, and ways individuals can protect our water resources. Students also made crafts to sell at the fair. Sales were donated to H2O for Life to help increase access to clean water. The school’s donations have helped children as far away as Tanzania and as near as the American Southwest.
The Water Fair and lessons leading up to it helped Salem Hills and Atheneum students develop the knowledge and confidence to create positive change. They built an awareness of worldwide issues and accepted the challenge of finding ways they could help, regardless of their age. Great job, students!
Salem Hills Elementary School y Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program organizaron una Feria del Agua esta primavera como parte de su programa de aprendizaje-servicio de fin de año. Antes de la feria, los estudiantes aprendieron sobre la crisis mundial del agua a través de H2O for Life, una organización sin fines de lucro que promueve el acceso al agua potable, el saneamiento y la higiene en todo el mundo. La Feria del Agua brindó a los estudiantes la oportunidad de abordar el problema mediante la educación y la recaudación de fondos.
La feria incluyó un Paseo Acuático y una galería educativa. Los estudiantes llevaron jarras de agua por un circuito al aire libre para simular el recorrido que casi mil millones de personas en todo el mundo deben realizar para obtener agua potable. Se colocaron letreros alrededor del circuito para destacar la importancia de tener acceso a agua potable. La experiencia destacó el tiempo y el esfuerzo que requieren los estudiantes de otros lugares para mantenerse sanos y asistir a la escuela sin infraestructura de agua potable.
Los estudiantes diseñaron y crearon sus propios juegos educativos para la galería de la Feria del Agua. Cada juego, similar a un carnaval, incluía información sobre el agua, el medio ambiente y maneras en que las personas pueden proteger nuestros recursos hídricos. Los estudiantes también elaboraron artesanías para vender en la feria. Las ventas se donaron a H2O for Life para ayudar a aumentar el acceso al agua potable. Las donaciones de la escuela han ayudado a niños de lugares tan lejanos como Tanzania y tan cercanos como el suroeste de Estados Unidos.
La Feria del Agua y las clases previas ayudaron a los estudiantes de Salem Hills y Atheneum a desarrollar los conocimientos y la confianza necesarios para generar un cambio positivo.
