Lulanzi Project Complete
Lulanzi Secondary School is located in Lulanzi village in the Kilolo District of Tanzania, with an enrollment of 842 students. The school employs a total of 18 staff members, including both teachers and non-teaching personnel.
Lulanzi faced a significant challenge due to limited access to safe and clean water, an issue prevalent in many schools and villages across Iringa. Students spent a considerable amount of time collecting water from unsafe sources for essential domestic purposes, such as cleaning, cooking, and drinking. Each day during break times, students were forced to travel to nearby streams or a small river, averaging a distance of 1.5 kilometers each way to gather water.Students often spent valuable class time fetching water, which adversely affected their studies and overall performance. The water from these sources is unsafe and unclean, posing significant risks to their health and well-being. Agricultural and domestic activities near the water source contribute to its contamination. As a result, waterborne diseases were common among students and the local population, especially during the rainy season.
AFTER:
Thanks to the collaboration between H2O for Life and St. Paul Partners, a shallow well has been drilled at Lulanzi Secondary School. This well will provide clean and safe water for students, staff, their families, and the surrounding village. As a result, both the health and academic performance of the students will improve. The school is actively working to protect the well to minimize maintenance needs. They are dedicated to maintaining their new clean water source in good condition, applying the strategies they learned through WASH training.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of the water system, our implementing partner, St. Paul Partners, conducted WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) training with both staff and students. The training included:
– Proper hand pump operation and maintenance
– Hygiene and sanitation best practices
– Budget planning for future repairs
As a result, the school has developed a team of students tasked with overseeing the care and maintenance of the water infrastructure. A portion of the school’s annual budget has been allocated for repairs and service costs.
