South Carroll Walks for Lusigetti

Posted by Nick Coughlin on June 5, 2014

This update was sent to H2O for Life by South Carroll student, Anna Lindsay, in 2014.

The First Annual Walk for Water at South Carroll High School, Sykesville, MD, sponsored by the National Honors Society was a success! There were over 150 participants who walked the 5K cross-country course on May 31st, most carrying two gallons of water. Over $4,000.00 was raised for the “WASH” program at the Lusigetti Primary School in Kenya. We collected over 200 gallons of water donations for the local South Carroll Food Bank to use in summer heat relief efforts.

The weather was perfect, the food was delicious, and the musical entertainment was a hit! Many participants stopped by our educational booth to learn more about the global water crisis, and ways we can act locally to conserve water and prevent run-off into the Chesapeake Bay. Most pledged to walk again next year!

All members of the NHS were actively involved in the event, as was our SGA which donated $5 per participant. The Robotics Club participated in the event, with Wall-E the Robot raising $100 and “walking” the track carrying 2 gallons of water. Students and teachers were smiling and enjoying the end of year community celebration. Thanks to all students, their families, and staff who came out to support this cause! Many thanks also to Mt Airy Food Lion and Weis for water donations, Ben Sherman for entertainment, The LEO Club and Bolen’s Bull-Pen for providing food at the event, and to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for donating educational materials!

Thank you!
Anna Lindsay
