We are a PreK-5th grade elementary school in the western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois! Our 5th grade students have started a service learning project. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $2,000 for two schools.
The first is Lugango Primary School in Kenya, which has no reliable water source on site. Our donation will go toward the construction of a 50,000 liter water catchment tank, latrines, and handwashing stations. Additionally, hygiene training for the staff and over 500 students at the school will be provided. These higher standards will translate to better academic performance!
The second school is here in the United States, St. Michael's Association for Special Education (SMASE) in Window Rock, Arizona. SMASE is the only school located on the Navajo Reservation dedicated to the care and education of children (ages 6 to 22) and adults (22+) with moderate to severe disabilities. Since 2014, the school has been struggling with water quality, and has already built a simple water treatment plant, flushed the water lines and replaced plumbing fixtures – like pipes, sinks or water heaters – that were contributing to the problem. They now need our help to purchase a combination of carbon and membrane water filters for this new system in order to ensure that students and staff will have reliable access to safe, clean water.
