New well for Nyanzwa students

December 14, 2018

Background
Nyanzwa Primary School is located in the Nyanzwa village within the Kilolo district in Iringa, Tanzania. The school has 463 students from pre standard 1 through standard 7 and 10 teachers. The school faces extreme challenges in getting safe and clean water for daily consumption. Student use polluted water from unsafe sources including streams, water from an old irrigation system and water from a nearby river. Before classes in the morning all students waste valuable time fetching water for cleaning, drinking and for using the toilets. This situation causes them to miss important lessons and valuable study time. This makes life very difficult for the students and teachers as there is also a high risk for water borne diseases.

Project Goal
The goal is to provide clean and safe water to Nyanzwa Primary School which will improve the quality of life for students, teachers and neighbors around the school. This will end the problem of unclean and unsafe water consumption and student would have time for their studies and their performances will be improved, there is no need for them to walk and waste time to find water.

Project Impacts
A shallow well was drilled at Nyanzwa and will benefit the students, staff and villagers around the school by providing a source of clean and safe water. Laboratory testing was conducted on the water from the borehole as well. It was shown that the water met Tanzanian standards for domestic use. It was clear of any contamination and had decent mineral levels. The health and performance of the students will improve.

Project Sustainability
To ensure sustainability of the project, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene education) training has been implemented at Nyanzwa. Students and teachers have been trained on how to use the hand pump, the importance of using safe, clean water and how to make the water project sustainable. They realize that everyone needs to be responsible and take  good care of the well. The school is cooperating with the village government and village water committee to insure sustainability of the project.
