Nyanzwa Primary School

Tanzania 463 beneficiaries Kilolo District, Iringa

Project Complete!

Nyanzwa Primary School is located in Nyanzwa Village, Kilolo District, Iringa. The school has no access to safe and clean water. They are using unsafe water from streams and other unsafe water sources within the village which are far away from the school. Polluted water causes water-borne diseases.
The school has 463 students and 10 staff members. The school has 9 toilet holes for girls and one toilet hole for boys which are not in good condition due to lack of water. Before classes in the morning all students have to fetch water that is used for cleaning, drinking and for the toilets.
Before classes in the morning all students have to go the river to fetch water used for cleaning, cooking porridge, drinking and for the toilets. This affects class hours and causes students to miss important lessons and valuable study time while they are fetching water. Their school performance often suffers. This water is also unsafe because the cattle and other animals regularly use this water. The river is also used for domestic activities like bathing, washing clothes and cultivating crops.
Project Proposal: New Well. Having a shallow well near the school would provide a clean and safe water source for the students, teachers, and staff to use. A shallow well with a hand pump will provide clean water that will help reduce the number of students, teachers, and staff that become sick with stomach illnesses, diarrhea and cholera. Students would also benefit from having a well at their school because they would have time for their studies and their performance will improve.
