Moyo Senior Secondary School
Project Complete!
Moyo Senior Secondary School is located 1 Km from Moyo town in Moyo District in Northern Uganda on the border of South Sudan. The school was built in 1962 and registered 750 students, 400 boys and 350 girls. It is a mixed boarding school. Students come from the West Nile region and many are refugees from Southern Sudan. The weather is dry, hot and windy but this does not stop students from learning.
In this school, the students have only one old dilapidated latrine with only three stalls. They have to line up in long lines between classes to use the toilet. If the lines are too long, many have to go in the bushes near the school where they risk snake bites and the girls may be harassed by the village men. We know that it is not a healthy practice but they have no choice. School staff also report that the students suffer from common illnesses such as stomach pain and diarrhea.
Global Women’s Water Initiative, Moyo chapter trained 20 local women, most who are widows and single mothers, to successfully build latrines and bathrooms. The women will construct 2 new latrines (4 stalls each) for all students and 2 latrines for male and female teachers (2 stalls for each). They will also build 2 washrooms specifically for girls so they can use them when they are menstruating, otherwise they would be forced to miss school while they are having their periods. They will also conduct hygiene training in school to lessen diarrhea, stomach pain and other water related illnesses.
This project will reduce instances of illness and improve class attendance, thus improve performance at school. The girl’s harassment and snake bites will be overcome. With this project you have the opportunity to support us so that together we can deliver a bright future for tomorrow’s leaders.
H2O for Life is not a WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) project implementer. We have partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) implementing WASH in Schools projects around the world. Our NGO partners match funds needed for each school project. We also have a generous donor that provides us with an interest-free loan that, along with matching funds, allows for many projects to be started or possibly even completed before total funds have been raised. In rare situations we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
