Canhungue Primary School is a rural, government-operated school serving 606 students (Grades 1–6) and 9 teachers in Tete Province, southeastern Mozambique. Located in a remote subsistence farming community along the N7 corridor—roughly 25 km from the Malawi border—the school operates in two daily shifts (7:00 AM–12:00 PM for Grades 1–3 and 6; 12:30 PM–5:00 PM for Grades 4–5).
Current Challenges
  • Sanitary Facilities: The school currently relies on basic, inadequate latrines for students and staff. The school urgently needs to upgrade to proper, permanent toilet blocks to improve community health and dignity.
  • Water Access: The existing school well is non-functional. Students must fetch water from a local river that frequently dries up during dry seasons. During these droughts, children dig shallow pits in dry riverbeds, gathering unsafe water exposed to animal contamination.
  • Living Conditions: Both teachers and students reside nearby in traditional grass-roofed huts with earthen floors.
To address these critical needs, the project encompasses three core initiatives:
  1. Construction of a reliable deep borehole well to deliver clean, consistent drinking water.
  2. Building modern, hygienic toilet blocks for students and staff.
  3. Implementation of a comprehensive health and sanitation training program led by public health nurse Sebber Banda.
