The Women’s Apprenticeship Program
The core curriculum focuses on sewing and dressmaking for men’s and women’s apparel, complemented by training in soap making, Kente weaving, and Batik tie-dye. To ensure long-term success, apprentices also receive instruction in basic English, mathematics, entrepreneurship, and digital literacy. Upon completion, graduates receive a certificate, a free hand-sewing machine, and essential tools to eliminate initial barriers to starting a business.
Now in its sixth year, the program has successfully graduated 40 women who are now self-sustained, indirectly securing livelihoods for more than 3,000 family members.
The apprenticeship center currently lacks access to running water, severely hindering daily operations and training quality. Key challenges include:
- Curriculum Constraints: Essential practical lessons—such as Batik tie-dye production—cannot be taught consistently due to the lack of steady water supply, limiting graduates' earning potential.
- Lost Training Hours: Apprentices must travel long distances into town and wait in long queues to haul water, drastically reducing instruction time.
- Financial Strain: Program funds are continuously diverted to purchase bottled water for drinking, sanitation, and hygiene.
H2O for Life partners with experienced NGO organizations around the world that build and support clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education projects in schools. These NGO partners cover half the total cost of every project funded through H2O for Life.
When students raise money for a project, 90% of the funds go directly to the project, and 10% supports the work that makes the project possible. This includes choosing trusted partners, managing funds responsibly, checking on projects, and reporting back so students can see the impact of their work.
This helps ensure every project is done well, stays sustainable, and truly changes lives.
