Kusewera Community Center
At first light in Chitipi, Kusewera Community Center—“to play” in Chichewa—comes alive as preschoolers explore, create, and learn through play, while older children join after-school programs in sports, arts, tutoring, and life skills, all guided by Malawian teachers and community leaders in service of Kusewera’s mission: empowering children and fostering community-led development through active play and engagement.
At the center of campus stands a small but vital health clinic. Clean, reliable water is essential—for hygiene, treatment, and everyday care. Without it, health, learning, and safety are at risk.
Beneath the campus, water is abundant. Two boreholes produce plenty of water for the needs of the campus. The issue has never been the water itself—it’s the unreliable electricity. When the grid goes down, water stops flowing entirely, sometimes for hours at a time, leaving the campus without access for essential drinking, hygiene, and clinic needs.
The project will install a hybrid water pumping system, powered by solar energy as well as the electrical grid. Solar energy keeps water flowing when the grid fails, while the grid supports it when the sun hides. Together, they create a reliable, resilient supply of clean water for the entire campus.
This system will:
- Irrigate the preschool feeding program, ensuring nutritious meals.
- Enable handwashing before meals and after play, safeguarding health.
- Support the clinic’s operations, so care is delivered safely.
- Free teachers to focus on teaching, while girls move through their day with dignity.
This intervention unlocks the full potential of the current water sources, turning an abundant but inconsistent resource into a dependable lifeline.
Implementation Partner: Freshwater Project International will manage installation, maintenance, and training, ensuring long-term sustainability of the upgraded system.
It’s more than infrastructure—it’s a foundation for health, learning, and leadership, ensuring every child at Kusewera has the chance to grow, dream, and thrive.
H2O for Life partners with experienced NGO organizations around the world that build and support clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education projects in schools. These NGO partners cover half the total cost of every project funded through H2O for Life.
When students raise money for a project, 90% of the funds go directly to the project, and 10% supports the work that makes the project possible. This includes choosing trusted partners, managing funds responsibly, checking on projects, and reporting back so students can see the impact of their work.
This helps ensure every project is done well, stays sustainable, and truly changes lives.
In rare situations, we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
