There are 91 girls, 109 boys and 7 teachers at Raya Primary School in desperate need of a water and sanitation intervention. The climate is classified as semi-arid tropics with two rainy seasons, March-May and November–December.
The students currently get water from an old catchment tank on the grounds that leaks and doesn't hold enough water to get through the long stretches of drought. Both the girls and the boys latrines are failing and in need of replacement. Due to the lack of water, students rarely wash their hands. There is rampant water borne disease across the school population due to lack of clean water causing absenteeism due to illness and a drop in school performance.
Proposed project:
  • Construction of a 75m3 rainwater catchment tank including the installation of a gutter system on the roofs
  • Construction of gender-segregated VIP latrines
  • Hand-washing station
  • Hygiene education program
