For the second year, Seventh grade students at River Road Middle School have been working very hard to make a difference in the lives of others across the globe. The Social Studies classes are involved in a service project which involves sponsoring Sipili School in Kenya through the H20 for Life: School to School initiative. Our students are learning about the need for clean water in Kenya and other African countries while working to raise $2,400 to provide a source of clean drinking water, adequate sanitation, and hygiene education for our sponsored school. We have received donations in exchange for bottled waters, “hat day” for students, and “jeans day” for teachers. Our “Drop in the Bucket” change drive brought in over $600. At our “Walk for Water”, held on March 27, members of the community sponsored our students who walked 3 miles at the Northeastern High School track. We have already exceeded our goal, but there are plenty of schools that need help. If you would like more information or want to make a donation, please email Celina McGee at cmgee@ecpps.k12.nc.us or go to www.h2oforlifeschools.org. In our rapidly changing world, it is more important than ever for students to become globally aware and socially responsible citizens. American students must no longer see themselves as separate and distinct from the rest of the world. Rather, they must learn to see themselves as contributing members of the global community. These students have increased their compassion for others and recognize that THEY can and have made a difference! We are so very proud of them! |
