Highview Middle School Teacher Auction

On February 5th, 2009, Highview Middle School sponsored a Teacher Auction for an H2O for Life fund raising activity. Students collected donations in their period 6 classes to “bid” on 25 teachers who volunteered to step onto the auction block. As part of the advertising campaign, figures of the teachers were plastered through-out the school building depicting teachers in many different costumes. Picture Mrs. Mallon in pink frills, and Mr. Regalado as a Leprechaun.

The auction was opened with the 7th and 8th grade girl’s ensemble, directed by Mrs. Stromback, singing a song written specifically for H2O for Life. The girls visited a local recording studio and recorded a CD of the song as well.

The bidding was fast and furious, and all teachers received bids of over $25.00 with the highest bid reaching over $100.00. The following school day, the students provided costumes that the teachers wore through-out the day. There were many cameras in view! A few videos may yet appear, especially Mr. Pennings as a Viking’s cheerleader! A few additional donations were given by families, and the event raised $1700.00 The Auction combined with our other H2O for Life events has raised over $10,000 for the third year in a row!

Our partner school project located in Kilfo, Ethiopia, will receive a bore-hole well, ventilated pit latrines and hand-washing facilities, changing the lives of over 800 students that attend Kilfo School. Additional funds will help bring water to a school in Mozambique. Way to go, Highview!

Help to Others

H2O for Life, a National 501c3 non-profit provides global partners for schools in the United States and schools in developing countries that are in need of water, sanitation and hygiene education. The organization began at Highview Middle School three years ago and spread nationwide last year.

Walk for Water During the past three years, Highview has raised over $30,000 to support schools in Kathungu Village in Kenya, Entonet School in Kenya, and this year is funding Kilfo School in Ethiopia. Students study the issues surrounding water, and plan activities to raise funds. They have hosted coin drives, bucket walks for water, dodgeball tournaments and a teacher auction. Every Thursday is H2O day, and teachers and students wear H2O shirts! Highview takes pride in the fact that H2O for Life started at our school.

SUCCESS STORY

Every Drop Matters

Have you ever stopped to think just how incredibly lucky we are? We have delicious meals, clean clothes, money, education opportunities, clean water and sanitation. We take so much for granted that we never stop to think where we would be if we didn't have it all. What if we were like all those girls in Africa?

There's a girl out there who is just like me, but that girl lives in a town with no access to water and incredibly poor sanitation. They are usually not lucky enough to have sewers in the town or even toilets and sometimes waste floods the roads. Every day she has to walk miles and miles just to get "fresh" water, which isn't really that clean. Then she has to walk all the way back with gallons of water. When she is supposed to be going to school, instead she is forced to go gather water. She slowly starts falling behind in her schoolwork. When she hits puberty, she might even drop out of school because of the terrible sanitary conditions at the schoolhouse. Without an education it is like she is chained to the town. It would be almost impossible for her to do anything with her life in these conditions.

If you were that girl, wouldn't you want someone to reach out and help you? That's what H2O is all about. Help to others! The people in Ethiopia are humans who deserve a fair chance to do something with their lives! I really hope you decide to help us and make even just a little bit of a difference! Put a drop in the bucket!
Every drop matters!
