Ndururi Primary School

Ndururi primary school is located in Kianyogu Sub location, Kahutha Location, Ndaragwa
Division in Nyandarua North District. It neighbors the Ndaragwa forest off Nyahururu – Nyeri
road, approximately 3kms from the tarmac road. Ndururi primary school has a population of 261
pupils (128 boys & 133 girls). Most of the classrooms are semi-permanent but are being
renovated by the community development fund (CDF).

Water and Sanitation Situation
The school has running water from a tap in the school but no storage system. The water also
does not run through out hence the importance of harvesting rain water. Ndururi has good
rainwater harvesting potential, which is attributed to the available large roof water catchment
since all the classrooms are roofed with corrugated iron sheets and are. During the dry spell, the
children walk for about 1km to a nearby stream which sometimes dries forcing them to walk for
3km to another stream which is permanent. The water quality is fair although it is polluted by
agro chemicals, direct livestock watering and poor sanitation (people washing clothes at the river
source).
On sanitation, the school has sub-standard pit latrines and the pupils do not have adequate water
to wash their hands after visiting the latrines. This results into frequent occurrences of diarrhoea.
