Murungai Primary School
Murungai primary school is located in Daiga location in Laikipia East district of Kenya. The
school is about 10km from the nearest town, Nanyuki.

Murungai primary school has a population of 510 pupils (256 boys & 254 girls) and 14 teachers
(5female and 9 male). All classrooms except two are semi-permanent.
Water and Sanitation Situation
The only available storage for rainwater is two small plastic tanks that were donated by community development fund and this serves as the main water storage structures. Murungai has good rainwater harvesting potential as the area experiences high rainfall. During the dry spell, the school gets water from a nearby community water tank which affects the learning as students have to go fetch the water.

On sanitation, the school has sub-standard pit latrines and the pupils do not have adequate water
to wash their hands after visiting the latrines. The school uses four 5-litre containers as hand
washing facilities. The school also abandons its latrines quite often as they keep collapsing due
to unstable soils. This is a health hazard especially to the children as anyone of them could fall
into the abandoned pits.
