Centennial Middle School in Minnesota

2010-2011 School Year

Centennial Middle School chose partner school Lehwelere High School, located in the Limpopo District of South Africa for their H2O for Life School partner during the 2010-11 school year.

Centennial Middle School has partnered with H2O for Life for the past four years.  During that time, the students and staff at the middle school have raised awareness about the global water crisis, and have donated funds that have helped six schools in developing countries receive WASH in Schools projects. Teacher and H2O Project advisor, Mark Domschot said, “As long as schools around the world need water, we are going to continue to help!”

This past year, Centennial Middle School connected their H2O for Life project with the World Cup event in South Africa.  The school displayed World Cup jerseys as well as flags and informational posters of all the countries that competed in the World Cup.  Students studied the history, geography and government of the countries.  Students wrote pen-pal letters to their partner school, and planned amazing events to raise funds.

To celebrate Halloween, students were allowed to dress in costume during the school day for a $2.00 donation to H2O for Life.  Many students participated, raising close to $800 for the project.  Centennial used the basic H2O for Life logo, but added the South African colors and the name of their partner school to the shirt.  Hundreds of shirts adorned the bodies of middle schoolers and their teachers.

Centennial MS also participated in a city-wide walk for water to raise awareness about the global issues, and to raise funds.  Students provided an informational booth at the event, and also provided a “toilet paper roll toss” activity for children.

To keep track of their progress, Centennial used a water jug as a visual aid, and also sold water droplets, creating a wall of support.

Centennial has once again committed to choosing a school partner for the 2011-12 school year.  We look forward to learning about their creative lessons and fundraising ideas for years to come.

Kentan safaris,

Our entire family enjoyed a whirlwind tour of Kenya’s top nature sites (Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara) which included the big five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) and many other fascinating birds and animals.

The greatest family experience was staying with our host’s family in a rural village outside of Nairobi. There we saw the impact of H2O for Life on daily lives, both of the school our children’s school adopted and the lives in the community from other H20 for Life activities.

We experienced rural life where meals were prepared using wood and coal, water transported by hand an hour away and food grown walking distance away. For us this was similar to a camping experience. For the village, it’s a daily way of life.

This experience also helped us to greater understand the communities in rural Kenya. We experienced a very tight knit community which readily assisted others in the community.

The kids loved playing with the children in the village and sharing their favorite games from home. The entire village/community enjoyed our children and regularly greeted them with a “Wajjah” or “Jambo”.

Thank you very much for this experience.

Asante Sana,

The Tangren’s

October 2008: Typically students at our Middle School aren’t allowed to dress up for Halloween. This year as a fundraiser for our partner schools in Bangladesh, Bolivia and Nicaragua, we allowed the kids to pay $5.00 to wear an appropriate costume to school for the day. Teachers and students participated and had a great time. We raised $2,000! Next up! T-shirt design contest and t-shirt sales before the holidays. Our goal this year is $10,000.00
